Faye Wong’s Ten Best ‘Minor’ Videos – #1

OK, I realize this is going to be very subjective and that no two fayenatics could possibly ever agree on the videos to include in this list let alone the rank order, but I’m going to give it a try. First, I should make it clear that I’m not talking about MVs, films, or major “official” concert tour videos. These are out. This list is devoted to those one-shot appearances that were captured by either professionals or amateurs and have made their way into video sites such as YouTube. For lack of a better word, I’m referring to them as her “minor” videos. These are often TV appearances, but they could include news footage, amateur videos, etc. This will be an ongoing project. I’ll be adding to this list until there are ten, and after that, I’ll delete from the ten to include any new ones. The latest pick will be posted separately. After it’s replaced by a newer pick, it will be added to this master list. [Note 6.3.08: Selections won’t be compiled into a single post.] Please feel free to add your comments, especially if you’d like to suggest a video for inclusion or feel I’ve included one that should be omitted.

1. My all-time favorite is this 2003 CCTV Music Awards video in which Faye Wong (王菲)appeared to accept the Pan-Asia Best Female Artist of the Year award. The ceremony was held in Beijing on 12 Sep 2003. In this clip, she sings “Wishing We Last Forever” (但愿人长久). I was first introduced to this video by Danny, the nicest and most generous fayenatic I’ve known. He’s a key member of the All About Ah Faye

forum, which is the most active and most knowledgeable group devoted to Faye. (Others who regularly share their knowledge in discussions are Incognito, Insecurity, Joyce, Mr. Sweden, John, Handmade, Jason, yASd, Fayever, and many, many others.) Anyway, when people ask me what’s so special about Faye, I find that the simplest answer is to show them this video. Faye is unlike any other entertainer on this planet in that she is the complete package: phenomenal voice, phenomenal beauty, phenomenal creativity, phenomenal style, phenomenal character. Even the best have only one of these qualities, a handful may have two, but only Faye has them all.

See “10 Best Minor Videos” in the right sidebar for links to the other selections.

  1. Love the site :) It’s hard to find good, frequently updated info on Faye in english! The good friends concert is one of my personal favorites too. The best part is when Carina goes on stage to sing with them, faye looks great.

Keep up the awesome work :D I’m definitely bookmarking your site!

  2. Thanks for the kind words, Angelus. :D Part of what’s so fascinating about Faye is the way people who work with her are naturally attracted to her. From stars like Carina, Na Ying, and Vicki to directors like Wong Kar Wai and TV personalities, reporters, songwriters, makeup artists, staff, photographers — everyone has nothing but nice things to say about her. We never ever hear anything bad. Even her ex-boyfriend Nic says that Faye doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. Dou Wei, her ex-husband, bitter over the divorce, had some negative things to say about the reasons for the divorce, but no one gave it much credence, and Faye has never responded or retaliated. I think great talent and extraordinary beauty can only take a star so far — she needs the kind of character, charisma, and aura that Faye has to take her to the top tier. I’m looking forward to your comments in the future!
