Faye’s First Film Discovered

According to Ent163.com (17 Sep 2008), in 1990, Faye Wong (王菲) played a role in a 50-minute film that few have seen and that has never been mentioned in Faye biographies or filmographies. She is listed in the credits as Wang Jing Wen (王靖雯). The title of the film, Other Professional Female Entertainer (别姬), also translates to Do Not Kyi. Faye, who was 20 at the time, plays the part of a middle-aged, 30-40 year-old singer in the 19th century. Faye’s performance is described as “slightly jerky.”

Hopefully, someone will post the movie in YouTube or provide a URL where we can see it.

[Added a few minutes later:] I just saw a video featuring clips from this film at Sohu.com. I’ve seen this film before. It’s been around a while. She plays the part of a gay singer in a love-hate relationship. In a future post, I’ll write about this movie.

  1. lol she looks indeed like an older woman

but is she gay or not? isnt she marrying a man

  2. Good question, y.A.S.d. It’s been a while since I last saw the film. You’re right. I remember her wedding scene. Her husband (fiance?) was stabbed? I guess it wasn’t all that clear. Then was it friendship from Faye’s perspective but more than that from the other woman’s? I’ll have to watch it again.

  3. where did you get this film? is she having a major role?

  4. I saw it as a YouTube video, but I haven’t had the the time to see if it’s still there. If I remember correctly, it was uploaded as 2 or more separate segments. Yes, she plays a major role, the successful counterpart to the friend who didn’t quite make it in life. Ironically, this is the only film I’ve seen in which she plays the role of a singer and actually sings. As in her early TV film roles, her acting is stiff, wooden, and one-dimensional. Still, for fayenatics, it’s a treat to see her. Regardless of the role, she still comes across as exrtremely beautiful and mysterious, giving the character a mysterious allure and depth that only she can create. It’s only in CKE that a director realizes how to get the most out of Faye as an actor. WKW brings out Faye’s natural ability to shine in romantic comedy roles where she can interpret the parts to suit her character and style. When Faye is allowed to perform her way, the result is amazing!
