Rare Song at Beijing ’98 Concert – ‘Rhetoric’

Faye Wong sang this song, “Rhetoric” (花言巧语), aka “Honeyed Words” or “Sweet Words,” at her 1998 Beijing concert. It sounds familiar, and I thought we discussed this song in Faye Wong Today, but I can’t find anything on it. I don’t think this was ever released in an album. It’s a beautiful, moving song. Can anyone give us more info about it?

[Added 6 May 2009] Sarah added the following comment on 5.6.09: “Hi, the original artist of this song is 黄莺莺, a really good singer who was popular in the 80s I think. I think Faye performed this song in the 1999 Singapore concert too. But other than in her 98/99 concerts, i don’t believe she performed it elsewhere…”

With Sarah’s tip, we’re able to learn that the singer is Tracy Huang, born in Taiwan and now living in Singapore. “Rhetoric” is from her 1996 EMI album by the same name. The MV of Tracy performing the song was added to YouTube by Usharimau on 24 June 2008.

  1. Hi, Jesse. Thanks for the leads! I checked them out but didn’t see any info about the original artist, about other Faye performances of this song, etc. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. I also wish we had a really good quality recording of this performance. But since it was recorded by a fan, this is probably as good as it gets.

  3. Sarah, thanks for helping us identify the singer of the original song. I hope you won’t mind our adding your comment to the article to let readers know that the mystery has been solved.

  4. you are very welcome; of course i don’t mind :) thanks for embedding the original music video with lyrics! it’s the first time i am looking closely at the lyrics; i didn’t realize how sad the lyrics were — makes me wonder if Faye sang the song intentionally at that time… (her 98/99 concerts were just before her divorce with Dou Wei….)

  5. Faye is very deep, and I’ve always suspected that the beauty in her songs comes from that deep place where words can’t seem to penetrate. She tends to deny connections between her songs and her personal life, and she’s being sincere, but we can’t help but make the connections when we listen to them. Thanks again, Chun!
