Chun: What Will Faye’s Music Be Like When She Returns?

I’m so excited. It seems that Faye’s slowly but surely coming back. (even though that wasn’t any solid evidence.) The ultimate concern is Would she release a brand new album? And what would her music be like after all these years?

Personally, I think her last album was the most successful one to the extent that she was able to get modern electronia into typical Chinese pop music. People generally think that her last album was average, I totally disagree.

Back to the question, Let’s discuss what other fans think her music would go.

I think she will greatly involve in the production than she ever did.

The question comes down to what direction she will go.

1st: After all those years of experimenting her vocal (influenced by Cocteau Twins, Sinéad O’Connor, Dolores O’Riordan, Teresa Teng and herself), her vocal had kept changing until the 2003 album that her vocal has become so natural and spontaneous. (All those complexity was minimized). I think she will continue this spontaneous and simple vocal in the future.

2nd: I don’t think Zhang Ya Dong will be her co-producer anymore. So, I guess her music will depend on her own. (just a guess based on interviews of Zhang Ya Dong or Katie on the internet, especially Katie claims that Faye wanna be a singer-song-writer)

3rd: She has tried many music styles b4. Dream-pop, downtempo, trip-hop, drum’n’bass, psychedelic, acoustic, rock, blues… (even though sometimes the influence were subtle), I simply cannot predict her future trend. However, nowadays, electronia has become a major music category in alternative/independent, dance or pop music industry. If she decides to catch a modern sense, she would embrace more electronia influence. Or she could back to basic acoustic like lots of piano, guitar and strings.

Anyway, I hope that she would have an entirely new direction and attitude. I don’t wanna see Faye using the prior way of producing music: collecting great songs from different song-writers, and lyrics were written by different ppl. That’s nothing wrong but I expect Faye can do a better job. Be tough and show us her talent.

  1. This is a good question, Chun. I’ve been wondering the same thing, too. What will her music be like when she returns? I have feeling she’s going to produce the entire album, and she’s going to work with the top song writers and musicians to create a sound that’s bold yet warm around a theme that will run throughout the album. The theme will probably be more music than lyrics since Faye tends to feel with sound more than with words. She’s going to compose and/or write some of the songs, and these will be the best in the album.

  2. I’ve the same thought as well. I think she will greatly involve in the production than she ever did.
