June 2009 Photo of Faye Wanted!

anonymousI can’t believe it! It’s the last day of June, and I haven’t been able to download a single photo of Faye (that was shot in June 2009) from anywhere on the web. In the left sidebar, I’ve been featuring a Faye photo of the month every month since Faye Wong Today began in April 2008. For June 2009, I may end up posting an anonymous blank such as the one above.

Please help. If you know of a photo (or video) of Faye taken in June 2009, please send me a URL.

Rare MV – Faye’s First Track in Her First Album

This is an extremely rare MV from Faye Wong’s (王菲) first album, Shirley Wong, which was released in November 1989 when Faye was 20. It represents a lot of firsts: the first track in her first album, and her first hit! The song is “However That Day.” At the time she was known as Wang Jingwen (王靖雯). This video was added to YouTube by MrMusical1980 on 28 June 2009

(The last part of the video, from the 4:10 mark, is damaged, but the audio is fine.)

Deb – ‘The True Story of Faye Wong’

Deb, on June 28th, 2009 said:

The Chinese title of “True Story of Faye Wong” is a play on the same movie title by Wong Kar Wai, starring the late Leslie Cheung. It is was a ground breaking hit for both director and actor.

[6.28.08 comment by Feifan:] Deb, you’re right! I looked it up and came up with a film called A True Story of Ah Fei (A Fei Zheng Chuan), which is also known as Days of Being Wild (阿飛正傳), released on 15 Dec 1990. It was written and directed by Wong Kar Wai and filmed by Christopher Doyle. It starred Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau, Carina Lau, and Jacky Cheung. This is another film I’m dying to see!

[6.28.08 comment by Feifan:] Found a bunch of Days of Being Wild video clips on YouTube. I like this one (below) best in terms of quality. I believe it’s the opening scene of the film. Notice the tremendous similarities to CKE!

Deb, on July 9th, 2009 said: Great clip, would love to own this movie!

Hands up who thinks Faye woulda been perfect for Maggie’s role???

Hmmmm I have a question – Maggie’s character is called “Soh Lai Tsun”, it sounds VERY familiar… is there another character in a WKW film called that?? maybe in 2046 or In the Mood for Love??

Deb, on July 9th, 2009 said: Yep, just checked up on “In the Mood for Love” by WKW, Maggie’s character was called Soh Lai Tsun (or Su Li Zen in mandarin) in that film as she is in “The True Story of Ah Fay”.

Love that WKW films have links in them, its like watching episodes of their characters throughout their lives – tapestry.

Now I must wonder if Maggie’s characters in both movies are the same woman. In “True story” she is a young innocent girl, then “In the mood” she’s a brooding woman, both looking for love, caught up in scandal.

Deb – Faye’s 1995 Tribute to Teresa

Deb, on June 28th, 2009 said:

I used to go back to HK during my summer holidays in the 90’s, so I was privileged enough to always catch the music award shows where Faye would perform most years. I used to be obsessed with recording anything that had Faye in it, ads (i had the “Gung Yik Gum Million Walk”), music vids, shows – everything.

The tribute to Teresa was the most memorable. That year Faye had released (or was about to release) “Restless” and had become quite a recluse and didn’t appear at any award shows. It was the time when the general public thought Faye was a bit snobby and could not understand her music (except for us true fans). So NO one expected her at this award show. When she turned up to just sing the song, everyone was surprised and when she delivered such an emotional performance (who didn’t shed a tear when she turned around to sing to Teresa?!!?), it reminded everyone that Faye was an amazing artist and stunningly beautiful in a mourning gown.

Yan Kiat – Rare 1996-97 Faye Videos

Yan Kiat (yk04_2), on 19 June 2009, added a number of rare Faye Wong (王菲) videos to YouTube. The quality of the videos is excellent.

Here’s Faye receiving the Hong Kong Best Female Singer Award for 1997.

The next two are of Faye in her 1996 TV appearance with host Chang Fei (张菲). He seems to always put Faye at ease, and as a result, we see Faye relaxed, smiling, and laughing. Absolutely adorable.

This performance accompanied her Hong Kong Best Female Singer Award in 1997.

Yan Kiat: She’s still the best Mandopop/Cantopop female singer despite the flaws in this [below] live [1997] show, due to the fact she was just back to her career after giving birth to her 1st daughter. There’s no need to criticise so much. She still have a good and nice vocal.
