Good Friends Concert Video – 72 Minutes

Faye Wong (王菲) with Na Ying (那英) and Jeff Chang (张信哲) at the Good Friends Concert in Hong Kong on 29 Sep 1998. Carina Lau (刘嘉玲) makes a brief appearance. This is rare — 1:11:10 in length. The quality, compared to the versions available to date, is fabulous. It’s wonderful to have this continuous version. It’s the next best thing to actually being there, live. Related articles: 1, 2.

More from Sweet Angel 2009

In this video, Faye Wong (王菲) and Li Yapeng (李亚鹏) deliver heartfelt thank you speeches. Faye’s is, as usual, compact and thoughtful; LYP’s is moving.

Some observations from the video and the event in general:

  • Na Ying (那英) and Eason Chan (陈奕迅) performed at the event, and clips are included in the video.
  • Katie Chen (陈家瑛), Faye’s manager, won the vase that was painted by Tong Tong (竇靖童) and Li Yan (李嫣). She said, “Faye Wong’s daughters are like my granddaughters, and as a grandmother, I am very happy to have their work.”
  • Carina Lau (刘嘉玲) showed up in a striking yellow coat.
  • Carina’s husband, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (梁朝偉), was a no-show.
  • Vicki Zhao (赵薇), too, was a no-show. (Na Ying, Carina, and Vicki are Faye’s closest friends.)
  • Chow Yun-Fat (周润发) and his wife, Chen Hui Lin (陈荟莲), after a lot of pre-event hype, failed to show. Rumors are rife re the reasons. In one of the articles, I read that he made remarks to the press that were “critical” of the fundraiser. Still, he donated valuable photographs for the auction.
  • Small S’s (小S, 徐熙娣, Xu Xi Di) kissing of Faye was probably the most sensational event of the evening.

Smile Angel Fund 2009 Dinner in Beijing, Dec 18

Faye Wong (王菲)  and Li Yapeng (李亚鹏) will be holding the 2009 Smile Angel Fund charity dinner on December 18 in Beijing. According to director Zhang Jizhong (张纪中), the hosts for the event will be Chow Yun-Fat (周润发) and his wife, Chen Hui Lin (陈荟莲). (See photo below, L-R, of Chow Yun-Fat, his wife, and LYP, at a press conference on 25 Nov 2009.)

Guests will include Faye’s long time friends Tony Leung (梁朝偉), Carina Lau (刘嘉玲), and  Na Ying (那英).

Among items up for auction is a vase  that’s painted by Faye and LYP’s daughters, Dou Jingtong (竇靖童) and Li Yan (李嫣). (Source:  People.com, 15 Dec. 2009)

Faye Wong With or Without Makeup

In today’s People.com, we see another installment of an endless series of articles in one of the countless dailies that purport to rank or list famous beauties on the basis of one characteristic or another. You have to admit that when they’re not annoying or totally off the wall, they’re sometimes amusing and, every once in a while, interesting. I’m not sure what to make of this article.

Usually, they begin with Faye Wong (王菲) and include other prominent stars. In this article, they include Vicki Zhao (赵薇 Zhao Wei), her close friend, and Cecilia Cheung (张柏芝), the wife of Faye’s ex, Nic Tse (谢霆锋). At other times, they also include Faye’s other good friends Carina Lau (刘嘉玲) and Na Ying (那英). The point of these articles is to get the readers’ attention, which ia always good for the media business. The fact that Faye is always at the top of the list and her name is always included in the title says a lot about her appeal. The magic formula is (1) mention Faye first and (2) include a photo of her and you have an instantly popular article.
people_com_18mar09

What’s interesting about this article is the point they’re trying to make — that makeup makes a tremendous difference in the beauty of stars. In this case, the writer says that Faye doesn’t look very good in the photo on the left but looks terrific in the photo on the right. But I think he just chose the wrong model to make his point. Faye is one of the few stars who looks just as great without as with makeup. Frankly, she doesn’t need makeup. She’s a natural beauty. She’s beautiful with or without. Period. All you have to do is look at her photos and videos. And these comparison photos are a good example of Faye’s beauty. Stunning on both sides.

Faye, Jeff, and Na Ying – ‘I’m Willing’

In this video from their Good Friends Concert in Hong Kong on 29 Sep 1998, Jeff Chang (张信哲, Zhang Xinzhe) sings “I’m Willing” with Faye Wong (王菲) and Na Ying (那英) singing background. (Click here for a related post.)

Rumor – Faye to Perform with Na Ying?

Every so often, we hear rumors that have the ring of truth simply because they seem highly probable. All the parts seem to fit. And this is one. Tianshannet reported today (10.21.08) that Na Ying’s (那英) new album release will be accompanied by concerts in places such as Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai sometime in October, November, or December. The truly intriguing part of this story is the claim that Faye Wong (王菲) will appear at one of the concerts as a guest star. Even if this is pure speculation on an imaginative journalist’s part, it still seems plausible that these two “sisters” would plan to appear together. And just as Na Ying reintroduced Faye to the mainland audience back in 1998, it seems fated that she would again reintroduce Faye to the same audience a decade later. The video below is one of my all-time favorites. It’s a duet of Faye and Na Ying singing “Meet in 1998” at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala show. It would be fantastic to see them perform this song together once more.

Faye Wong and Vicki Zhao – Very Close Friends

Faye Wong (王菲) and Vicki Zhao  (赵薇 Zhao Wei) are very close friends. Vicki, Na Ying (那英), and Carina Lau (刘嘉玲 Liu Jialing) are like sisters to Faye. This video is a tribute to Faye and Vicki’s bond. It’s from a YouTube upload by hmschocolate on 20 Oct 2008.

Zhang Ya Dong on Faye Wong’s Return

In recent days, China’s entertainment media has been focusing on Zhang Ya Dong’s (張亞東) comments about Faye Wong’s (王菲) return. In a recent interview, he said that he’s working with Na Ying (那英) on her new album. Before the Olympic Games, there were rumors that Na Ying and Faye would be developing an album together after the Olympics. It looks as though Na Ying is following through. About Faye’s absence in the project, Zhang simply said that she has decided to extend her rest for an undisclosed reason. If rumors of Faye’s miscarriage or abortion are true, then the reason is quite obvious: she needs time to recuperate. However, we should all remember Katie Chen’s (陈家瑛, Chen Jiaying) admonition that we be patient and not pressure Faye to return until she feels good and ready.

Apparently, the release of Zhang’s new album, which will feature a “new” song by Faye, is immiment. The song was recorded sometime in the past but never released. Next month (Nov 2008), Zhang is planning a live performance of the various artists in the album. He hopes that Faye will be able to participate, but he hasn’t received a firm commitment. Zhang, in the past, has consistently acknowledged Faye’s seminal contribution to his career and development. He realizes that Faye is unique and very special in China’s music industry, and he’s looking forward to working with her once again.

Background info: Faye, Zhang, and song writer Lin Xi (林夕) are referred to as the “iron triangle” because of the many benchmark hits that they produced together. Zhang and Faye are close, and he has played an important part in Faye’s career. Na Ying is one of Faye’s closest friends. They are more like sisters than friends. Katie is Faye’s long-time manager. She and Faye are careful to keep their relationship professional, but Katie is really like a mother to Faye.

The audio in the video below is current, but the video clips, I believe, are drawn from old sources. The Sina clip of Faye in the recording studio is obviously from the past.

Faye Wong’s July 31 Birthday Celebration

Carina Lau (刘嘉玲 Liu Jia Ling) flew to Beijing on Thursday, July 30, to celebrate Faye Wong’s (王菲) birthday with Faye and other close friends, including Na Ying (那英) and Hu Jun (胡军). On the 31st, they gathered at a restaurant close to the Museum of Fine Arts. Eastday/Sina report that the location is “in the depths of an alley, very remote.” They sat at two tables, and feasted on old Beijing-based dishes such as gong tingcai, duck, fish, and rice. After their meal, at around 21:00, the party moved to a different locaton, a karaoke bar, a four-story establishment with luxurious private dining rooms. Although they weren’t allowed into the 4th story room where the party was being held, reporters claim to have heard Faye’s distinct voice, singing a duet with Na Ying.

Rumor – Faye’s 40 Days Pregnant

This rumor is so prevalent that it’s tough to ignore — Faye Wong’s (王菲) been pregnant for the last 40 days. According to sources such as Sina.com, her pregnancy is in response to Li Yapeng’s (李亚鹏) desire for a son. They have two daughters, Tong Tong (竇靖童 Dou Jingtong) and Li Yan (李嫣). Tong Tong’s father is Dou Wei (竇唯), Faye’s ex. Faye will be 39 in a few days, and if this rumor is true, pundits fear a difficult pregnancy.

Other news – Carina Lau (刘嘉玲 Liu Jia Ling) flew to Beijing on Wednesday, July 30, to celebrate Faye’s birthday with Faye and other close friends, including Na Ying (那英) and Hu Jun (胡军), on the 31st. Faye’s actual birthday is on Aug. 8.

Update 8.5.08: According to CQnews.net (8.6.08), Faye’s manager, Katie Chen  (陈家瑛 Chen Jiaying), confirmed reports of the pregnancy on Aug 5. (BTW, time discrepancies between this blog and China sources are a result of differing time zones.) Re questions about China’s one-child policy, the response, according to at least one report, is that Faye is a Hong Kong national.

Update 8.6.08: Katie’s confirmation at 3PM on Aug 5. (Source Jun-Jun’s blog in China Economic Net)

Faye Will Be at Carina’s Wedding on July 21

According to the latest reports (rumors?), Faye Wong (王菲) and Li Yapeng (李亚鹏) will be at Carina Lau (刘嘉玲, Liu Jia Ling) and Tony Leung’s (梁朝偉, Leung Chiu-Wai) wedding in Bhutan on July 21, Monday, at the luxurious Uma Paro hotel. They’ll be among 80 guests who will be flown there on two private jets from Bangkok, where the guests will gather. One of the jets belongs to Brigitte Lin (林青霞, Lin Qingxia), who costarred with Faye and Tony in the 1994 megaclassic Chungking Express. Wong Kar-wai (王家卫), director of the film and planner for the wedding, and Na Ying (那英), who is very close to Faye and Carina, will also be there.

Carina has asked the guests to bring alcoholic drinks with them in anticipation of a shortage in Bhutan. Carina and Tony are tying the knot after a 19-year courtship. The couple starred with Faye in the blockbuster 2004 Wong Kar-wai film 2046.

Star Moms Organizing – Faye’s on Their A List

A group of stars who are also mothers are organizing to visit the Sichuan earthquake area to provide firsthand support to the thousands of young children who are orphans. The contact list includes: Faye Wong (王菲)、Na Ying (那英)、Wu Junru (吴君如)、Yuan Yongyi (袁咏仪), and XU Xi-tai (徐熙娣). (Source msn.ent.ynet.com, 26 May 2008).

Comment: Whether Faye will participate is up in the air. She has stated in the past week that she won’t visit the disaster area because of the confusion that her presence might cause. Interfering with the work of the relief crews is the last thing she wants to do, and her high profile media presence might do just that. Still, I’m sure that she wants to go and is weighing the pros and cons. Her presence would definitely draw invaluable media attention to the plight of the survivors, especially the orphans. However, seeing the impact of her presence at relief events in Beijing and Hong Kong, she has to be concerned that the overwhelming media presence might hamper relief efforts. It’s a tough call. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Faye Wong’s Ten Best ‘Minor’ Videos – #2

2. Faye Wong’s (王菲) Good Friends Concert with Na Ying (那英) and Jeff Chang (张信哲, Zhang Xinzhe), with an appearance by Carina Lau (刘嘉玲, Liu Jia Ling), in Hong Kong on 29 Sep 1998 has to be one of the best. The video quality is poor in all four parts and especially poor in the first. Still, it’s an exciting view into why friends and fans love Faye so much. In this video, she’s the most relaxed that I’ve ever seen her in

a stage performance, letting her hair down and just having a great time with good friends. Her dancing is completely natural and exuberant, and captivating. She’s the obvious megastar and major draw, but she’s completely comfortable in sharing the spotlight. This humility in her character is natural, consistent, and ultimately endearing.

Yet Another ‘Faye Wong Will Return’ Rumor

In the vacuum that remains between Faye Wong’s (王菲) infrequent public appearances, it seems the media grows increasingly desperate for news about Faye, China’s hottest celebrity. The fact that she’s been in semi-retired seclusion for the last three years or so only enhances her appeal. The Chinese public can never get enough of her, and even the briefest glimpse captured by paparazzi or fans mushrooms into a media blitz throughout the Chinese-speaking world and much of Asia for days or weeks on end.

Entertainment editors need little or no excuse to plaster recycled photos and far-fetched rumors of Faye or her family and friends on the front pages of their paper and web entertainment sections. The mere mention of her name is enough to attract huge numbers of readers and viewers. And this period without Faye is no exception.

Imaginative journalists have concocted another “come back” rumor that’s been circulating for the past few days. This time, they’re using the circumstance of Faye and Na Ying’s (那英) recent appearance in Chengdu as “evidence” that they’re secretly plotting a comeback. In this scenario, Na Ying will come out of her semi-retirement and schedule a few live concerts after the Olympics. And, in a spectacular surprise, Faye will join Na Ying as a guest, onstage, to reprise their famous “Meet in 1998” duet or a few of her many, many hits.

The same writers use the fact that a decade has passed as circumstantial proof that a 10th anniversary performance of the two close friends is a logical inevitability. Needless to say, they are extremely vague about the sources of their insider information, and the trail is usually filled with hearsay accounts of an informant with obscure connections to an acquaintance of a person who works for a close relative of an agent who has contact with a manager of Faye’s husband’s friend. Of course, the source, after all is said and done, turns out to be a ghost with no name.

The point isn’t so much “Is the rumor true?” but rather the fact that Faye’s absence from entertainment has left a gaping void in the minds and hearts of the Chinese people — a sense of emptiness that won’t be filled until Faye finally returns.

Still Another Rumor of Millions for Faye Wong’s Return

The Chinese media routinely reports rumors of millions of dollars being offered to Faye Wong (王菲) for a comeback performance either onstage or in a recording. Here’s a recent example, “Faye Wong tipped to return” (CRI 4 May 2008): “Record company Live Nation has reportedly offered a price of HK$ 100m for pop diva Faye Wong to return to the stage, after she faded from the entertainment scene since her marriage 3 years ago. Live Nation boasts such big names as Madonna, who is on a 10-year contract for HK$ 930m, as well as Irish rock band U2, and US hip-hop king Jay-Z.”

These are usually accompanied by comments from Faye’s manager, Katie Chen (Chen Jiaying 家瑛) or her friends Carina Lau (Liu Jia Ling 刘嘉玲) and Na Ying (那英), who deny any knowledge of plans to return but express the personal wish that she would. Lately, lyricist extraordinaire Lin Xi (林夕), who’s collaborated with Faye on numerous songs, has been quoted by the media as saying that he wishes Faye would relent and accept the Olympic committee’s invitation to perform in the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Rumors also have the committee offering Faye millions to come out of her semi-retirement to perform. BTW, this photo is from the closing set of Faye’s Hong Kong Scenic Tour 98-99 concert series.

Faye Wong at Yang Kun’s Debut Concert

On 22 Apr 2008, Faye Wong (王菲) attended Yang Kun‘s (昆) first solo concert in Beijing Workers’ Gymnasium with close friends Carina Lau (刘嘉玲, Liu Jia Ling) and Na Ying (那英). Na Ying joined Yang Kun, acclaimed sad song pop singer and songwriter, onstage. Faye and Carina were acknowledged by Yang Kun, and as expected, the crowd went wild when Faye was introduced. Clearly, Faye was a star attraction even as she tried to remain inconspicuous.

Rumor: Is Faye Wong Pregnant?

Faye Wong’s (王菲) visit on 26 Apr 2008 [Apr 23?] to a Buddhist temple (Mount Omei ten thousand years temple) in Chengdu with her good friend Na Ying (那英) — see the earlier post — stirred quite a bit of gossip, and one that resurfaces regularly is speculation that Faye is pregnant. Overzealous pundits claim that she is in Chengdu to pray for a safe delivery, but responses from Li Yapeng (李亚鹏的) and his brother, Li Yawei (李亚伟), have been inconclusive.
