‘I Will Always Love You’ – Faye’s Hot R&B

On 8 Sep 2007, Muskmelon posted the audio (see below) for Faye Wong’s (王菲) cover of Whitney Houston’s 1992 hit, “I Will Always Love You,” on YouTube. He gave the date for the live concert recording as 1994, but was corrected in a comment by YunaHamasaki, who said, ” Actually this live cover was performed back in 1993 at her Satchi concert in Hong Kong.” I couldn’t find a photo or video of Faye singing this song. The photo on the left is from Faye’s MV, “Seasonal Gale,” from her Feb 1993 album, No Regrets, one of my all-time favorite albums. This is audio only — no video — so you’ll have to use your imagination to picture Faye on a stage in front of a live and loud audience. Songs like this remind us that Faye can belt it out with the best in the world. In the YouTube comments, nearly all the writers are blown away by the strength and power of Faye’s voice. This is another of her performances that I wish had been recorded in a studio or live by professional engineers and released on a CD. It’s a breathtaking performance that raises goosebumps all over your body. This girl can sing!

  1. wow! i also wish she had released this on a disc.

  2. wow, she did a great job! The thing I love about Faye singing english songs is that her english pronounciation is actually really good and doesn’t sound like a chinese person who doesn’t understand what they’re singing, singing it. Cos sometimes its just embarrassing if I let my aussie friends hear a chinese singer who butchers a classic english song.

  3. she carries this song perfectly.. she’s amazing and always a good singer.. wish there’s a video of her singing this.. hard for me to imaging.. she’s too good…

  4. Angelus, Deb, Kellyz: Even if the quality of the recording isn’t very good, this is still one of my all-time favorite Faye songs. I get goosebumps all over when I listen to it. Faye has so much soul! I agree — “she carries this song perfectly”! Maybe in one of her comeback albums she’ll do it right in a recording studio and include an MV, too. I hope!

  5. I agree. It’s stunning. Especially when she really starts belting it out at 3 minutes 5 or so. I’m actually glad she didn’t do too many like this since it makes the times she did it extraordinarily special. I’m listening to it now…. wow, she really had no inhibitions on stage at 24. Incredible!

  6. wow… faye sounds sensational!!! Bravo!!!
